Abstract:The principle of modularity (henceforth as: mod-y.) was increasingly (here as: incr-y.) applied to industrial engineering and production in several industries within the last 100 years. Complex service offerings are also becoming incr-y. conceptualized as modular (here as: mod.) service (here as: serv./serv-s.) designs, e.g. information technology serv-s, financial serv-s. and logistical serv-s. This paper describes typical advantages and disadvantages (henceforth as: adv & d-adv.) of mod. product and serv. architectures. The inherent limitations of mod. conceptualized products and serv-s. become obvious. Furthermore it is shown that the efficiency adv & d-adv. of mod. product and serv. designs can be explained and analyzed by using the new institutional economics and the resource based view of the firm as well established economic approaches suited to solve management problems and organizational problems.
