Abstract:It is very difficult to measure the impact or success of a service in sectors such as management consulting (hereafter as: cons). In these markets of goods btw. experience and credence, symbolic value is helpful and necessary to complement quality perceptions. This article looks at the role of personnel selection (here as: p-sel.) in the context of quality symbolization. It is argued that the predominant tool for p-sel. in the cons. sector, the case study, accounts for both a signalling effect of rationality to the business environment and a subjectification of cons. staff to the cons. culture and rationality beliefs. The case is made that the process of p-sel. has latent effects, which nonetheless contribute to the cons. industry's success.
