Abstract:With particular emphasis on links to board size and industry characteristics, this study explores the ethnic (hereafter as: ethc.) and gender (as: gnd.) diversity (as: div.) of the corporate board of U.K. companies. A novel dataset is used, covering a large sample of U.K. PLCs (PLC for 'Public limited company') and describing a director's gnd., ethnicity and position held. Both eth. and gnd. div. are found to be very limited. Among executive positions, div. is found somewhat less pronounced. There is found significant cross-sector variation in gnd. div., with an above average prevalence of women in retailing, utilities, media and banking, whereas such variation in eth. div. is considerably less pronounced. It is suggested that a close proximity to final consumers plays a more significant role in shaping board div. than does the female presence among the industry's workforce.
