Abstract:The article aims to study the drivers of retail performance, both on the firm level and on the country level, in order to contribute to the understanding of the performance implications of international retail expansion and the choice of retail strategy. Using data obtained from the 2005 Global Powers of Retailing database, the authors find that retailers' growth in sales is associated with retail expansion speed. A negative relation, however, is found between retailer sales growth and many retail formats and countries of operation. Retailers that expand to less developed countries with high disposable income are found to be more successful.
