Abstract:Downsizing is suggested to avoid traumatic reductions in labour force during hard times. When doing this, human resources must be treated less like overhead and more like actual businesses. Human resource planning instead of personnel administration is considered.A number of actions are offered to keep the company downsized: making hard to get hired; making hard for poor performers to stay; slowing down the upward career path; keeping the pay system from building excess management back into the company.
