Abstract:Problem drinkers have to be persuaded to accept assistance and they cannot be compelled to do so. The main issues for managers in dealing with the workers' consumption of alcohol are considered. Some legal and medical criteria are reviewed. Society's ambivalent attitude towards alcohol is shown. The importance of the work nexus in devising policies and approaching situations is explored. Based on a thorough review of tribunal cases, some of the errors management can make in dealing with the issue as a discipline problem is indicated. Actions have to be based on considerations such as the nature of the industry, the job, the occupation, the employee's responsibilities, and the employer's reputation.
