Abstract:In the past, unemployment benefits were granted only to employees who were laid off. Now, however, employees who voluntarily quit or are discharged may be awarded such benefits as well. The framework of the system was established through the provisions of the Social Security Act and the Federal Unemployment Tax Act. Qualifying requirements, weekly benefit amounts and duration of regular unemployment benefits vary. The cases of voluntary quit, negotiated quits and job discharge are described and analyzed. Violations of employment rules and the severity of employee's actions are considered. It is shown that proper documentation is the company's best protection.
