Abstract:It is impossible to implement a painless downsizing, but thoughtful planning and execution can minimize the trauma. The human resources department at Sola Optical USA, Inc. learned some valuable lessons about determining how many (and which) jobs to cut, how to use outplacement services and how to plan severance benefits during its own downsizing process. A philosophical approach to downsizing is outlined. It results in a commitment to provide as much support as possible to help employees exit with dignity and move into the next phase of their work life. The role of open communication channels is emphasized. As soon as the downsizing is over, managers must be allowed to direct their energy toward recovery.
