| Abstract: | A review of tax benefits available to U.S. households under the federal tax laws, linked with estate tax under the 1986 Tax Reform Law. The article advocates placing property assets in a trust, and the use of a bypass trust for spouses, which could be frustrated by a joint tenancy. Two boxes review death taxes on estates in the various states and methods of bequeathing a family business. The exemption of donations to charities and gifts to friends is also summarized. |
