| Abstract: | An analysis of multiresource production capabilities of the National Forest System is described. The analysis is used for national planning in the USDA Forest Service. Previously unrecognized limits to the productive capabilities of the National Forest System are identified. A multilevel optimization approach is tested and is applied to all forest system regions of the coterminous USA. It is concluded that it is not feasible for the National Forest System to supply a constant proportion of all projected resource needs. The results have led to Forest Service program alternative involving more relience on other forests and rangelands and more intense multiresource management of the National Forest System. |
