Abstract:Why do companies, who aspire to be global in their other activities, find it so difficult to be truly global in managing their key personnel? There has been much discussion in academic journals and the popular press about globalization: whether consumer preferences are converging; or if certain industries can be classified as global. James in fact argues that: "The imperatives for globalization are nowwell understood and the perceived benefits so great that globalization is approaching the point where it has become the strategic norm rather than the exception".
