Abstract:There are two principal types of dry cell battery: primary (or disposable), and secondary (rechargeable). Within the primary battery sector there are three main sectors: zinc carbon, zinc chloride and alkaline. Most of the growth in the market place has been with batteries using alkaline manganese technology. This type of battery has seen the greatest competition in the UK , with Duracell (wholly of this type) challenging Ever Ready's Gold Seal product. The secondary (rechargeable) batteries are nickel cadmium (ni-cad). They are much more expensive, and they have not provided any really serious challenge to the primary batteries. Their sales have been affected by the recession, with volume losses of around a quarter between 1989 and 1992.
