| Abstract: | The relationship between text and audience is that of a dialogue. In any dialogue the partners share not only a common code but a common memory, too. Distinction should be made between two types of speech activity: one is meant for an abstract addressee whose memory volume is assumed to be typical of any native speaker of the language, the other is addressed to a concrete or imagined interlocutor whose memory is familiar to the author of the text. The article offers examples of Russian poetry of the l8th-l9th centuries to illustrate how the text contains the image of the audience. |
