Abstract:The issue of labour standards and international trade has a long cyclical history, whose phases correspond to the globalisation process of the world economy. The economic facet of labour standards relates to the problem of "unfair competition" and "social dumping". International trade between countries with wide disparities in labour costs is a subject of profound controversy. This paper reviews some of the recent theoretical contributions on the subject of international labour standards and trade, examines the relationship between trade liberalisation and "social harmonisation" in the context of European integration and attempts to draw some lessons for wider trade liberalisation.
