Abstract:In the article we are dealing with the surveillance by means of information technology, or, in a narrower sense, with data surveillance.Allusions to Orwell and Bentham are almost obligatory in such discussions. The analysis focuses on "the data-image" of an individual, which is beyond his influence and is increasingly taking his place in numerous social relations.Although the extent and depth of data surveillance are growing every day, paranoia and apocalyptic visions are not the right answers since they most often lead to entirely misplaced Luddite movement. The problem is not in technology, but in its social use.The necessary corrections can be achieved by means of civil engagement; especially in the circle of those professionals without whom information development would stop. Therefore the article is above all an appeal to their moral conscience.
