Abstract:Through Sui-Fung Ceramics, banks and investors took a swan dive into the China market. Noe they wish they'd looked before leaping. Nineteen ninety-three was a pretty big year for Siegfried Lee. When it began, his Siu-Fung Ceramics was still a small trading firm buying ceramics-making equipment and selling it into China. But by year's end it was the basis for a corporate empire. In the intervening 12 months, Lee had gone to Germany and bought the first of three companies that make equipment for producing everything from teacups to tiles and tubs - the fodder of China's building boom.
