Abstract:The central importance of relationships at work is beyond dispute. From directors to junior staff there is acknowledgement that relationships affect performance. We all know technically brilliant managers who reach a ceiling in their development because their relationship skills are poor - they seem to demotivate their team, upset people, inflame conflict, stifle performance. Conversely, it is managers who motivate, influence, delegate, coach, facilitate and lead through the medium of their relationships who are increasingly identified as having highest potential. Relationship excellence is an important goal of management development. A model of relationship development, the Relationship Q®, is presented as a framework for use in a wide range of management development interventions.
