Abstract:Even though the concept of dynamic capabilities (DCs) is essential in sustaining a firm's competitive advantage, the literature is full of inconsistencies and overlapping definitions. This article offers a definition of DCs and separates them from substantive capabilities. It also outlines 1) how substantive capabilities and DCs are related, 2) how this relationship is moderated by organizational knowledge and skills, 3) how organizational age influences the speed of utilization of DCs and 4) how organizational knowledge and market dynamism influence the likely value of DCs. This paper helps to delineate important differences in the DCs that new ventures and established companies have, revealing a key source of strategic heterogeneity between these firms.
