Abstract:This paper deals with the issue of opportunity discovery and exploitation. The article starts by arguing that valuable problem-solution pairings are crucial to opportunities and that discovering opportunities relates to intentional search or recognition over the solution space. Increasement in problem complexity leads to cognitive search via theorizing becoming more beneficial than experiential search via trial-and-error. Cognitive search necessitates knowledge sharing, which relates to knowledge appropriation and knowledge accumulation hazards. Various governance forms used to relieve the effects of these hazards are discussed in the article. Also a framework for explaining various entrepreneurial organizational forms is suggested: the framework combines search and recognition as modes of opportunity discovery.
