Abstract: | This paper deals with the relationships btw. leadership (hereafter as: l-ship.) theory, practice (here as: t-and-p.) and development (here as: t-p-d.), drawing on both the higher education (as: h-e.) and wider l-ship. literature. After clarifying the importance of context for t-p-d., the first section explores a range of factors contributing to theoretical 'contests'. The second section deals with the challenges faced by l-ship. practitioners, as individuals, and through exercising l-ship. as a collective responsibility in the context of operating environments' changes within h-e. institutions, across sectors and countries. Three areas are emphasized where some rethinking of the links btw. t-and-p. are necessary. The third section presents several specific suggestions as to how closer alignment btw. t-p-d. can be achieved. To conclude, it is argued for greater maturity in research, practice and development recognizing l-ship. to be played out in complex, dynamic and changing social systems. |
