Abstract: | This paper deals with the tensions of U.K. universities (hereafter as: univts.) and their leaders through analysis based on findings from a study comprising over 150 semi-structured face-to-face interviews in 12 U.K. univts. Identified are five main constituent elements of leadership (here as: l-ship.) practice in higher education (as: h-e.), namely personal, social, structural, contextual and developmental elements which are examined to show how they shape perceptions and experiences of l-ship. It is concluded with a refined model separating the multilayered nature of h-e. l-ship. at individual, group and organizational levels. Especially, it is argued that ..... h-e. l-ship. may be best regarded as 'hybrid'. |
