Abstract:This paper examines the contingent nature of resource investment (hereafter as: inv.) and deployment (here as: dpl.) decisions (as: decs). Based on a sample of banking firms, it is indicated that firm performance (as: f-perf.) is suffered if managers' inv. decs. differ from the norms of competitors for both human and physical capital. However, when depl. decs. support inv. decs., greater inv. deviation, both high and low, generally enhances f-perf. Specifically, f-perf. is optimized by making congruent resource inv. and depl. decs. as opposed to maximizing or economizing either decision independently. Thus, resource management via asset orchestration is highly important for superiour performance.
