Abstract:The article studies the effect of analogical thinking approach on new product innovations. The authors conduct a multiple case study where the data is collected from four engineering companies that have been able to create breakthrough innovations with the help of analogical thinking. The findings reveal that using in-depth technical and contextual analysis in abstracting the problem is crucial for analogical innovations. The chances for a successful innovation increase if the problem is abstracted to the level of its structural similarities to other settings. A process model for product innovation development using analogical thinking is proposed.
