Abstract:Study of how rise in overseas production was closely linked to increases in sales and profitability related to the degree of multinationality among 304 large British manufacturing companies from 1972 to 1984. The author opines that the superior performance of multinationals was independent of destination, and primarily due to competitive advantage rather than a higher rate of profit. Four hypotheses of the impact of multinationality on performance are given. Overseas production performances are analyzed in four Tables. The author concludes that resources, skills and strategies are of primary importance.
