Abstract:Behind the bright lights and glamour of London's West End, the arts are in serious difficulty. The financial hardships and administrative changes threatening Britain's artists are reviewed. It is pointed out that experimental art suffers most in hard times. It is difficult for a theatre which specialises in new writing to attract corporate money as a way of making up the shortfall. Most of the sponsorship goes to projects that are already successful or going to be successful. So any area of the arts which is avant-garde, is dependent on public-sector funding. The popularity of the arts in some respects accounts for their current financial crisis. There are insufficient resources to satisfy the rise in demand.
