Abstract:Examinations of the long-term future of economics are focused on changes in three broadly analog influences: the profession's internally-generated research agenda, the demands for answers that arise outside the profession, and the supply of tools and techniques available from outside economics. These influences do not separate as clearly as their manufacturing-industry analogs. The laws of motion that govern the evolution of intellectual activity are not well understood. Therefore, long-term forecasts are more likely to provide amusing quotes for future readers, and the same will prove to be true of this essay.
