Abstract: | The UK market includes "Scotch" whisky and other whiskies. Whisky was the largest sector of domestic consumption of spirits in 1989. Its 43 percent volume share represented a decline from 47 percent in 1985, that is consumption has fallen 5 percent over the five-year period. The UK spirits industry has been becoming centralised in a few multinational companies. Imports of whisky were significantly higher in 1989 than in 1988, growth of malts is slow but steady. Leading spirit brands must maintain a high market profile in order to stay at the top. Market structure, home produced whisky by type, consumer profile of whisky drinkers, brand shares in the whisky market, turnover of whisky market operators and advertising expenditures are given. |
