Abstract:As technology-intensive businesses rely more and more on external resources and capabilities, guidelines to successful management of these relationships are emerging. There are a number of driving forces causing firms to make use of external resources but reliance on a single driving force can be dangerous. The successful multinational development and design of the Boeing 767 was possible only because a communication system was available to transmit massive amounts of data. It is essential for prospective partners to become familiar with each other's engineering traditions and design philosophies to assure themselves of compatibility.
