Abstract:The aim of this article is to analyze the efficiency of German public theaters in 1991-2006. It is tested whether the assumption of cost-minimizing behavior is reliable in the field of German public theaters. This is done by using a stochastic frontier analysis approach. The results indicate that the cost-minimizing assumption can't be maintained. A efficiency analysis that is based on a cost function approach seems inappropriate in the case of German public theaters. Considerable, unobserved heterogeneity across theaters is found. Overall, there seems still to be space for improvement in the employment of resources in the field.
