Abstract: | Employment flexibility - e.g. in relation to easier dismissal and the removal of most restrictions on temporary work - has grown in France during the eighties. Its consequences for labor relations, collective bargaining and the labor movement are analyzed. Employment flexibility as a much broader category than "flexitime" is interpreted. Its relation to employee participation and flexibility of the means of production is shown. Modifications of work schedules and negotiations within firms are demonstrated. Employers' policies with respect to labor costs, decentralization of the system of labor relations and the orientation of union actions toward the company level are examined. |
