Abstract:Findings are reported from a recent study of recruitment behavior by employers in relation to the long-term unemployed (LTU). The employers' attitudes towards the LTU had been examined. The research objectives and methods are overviewed. Results suggest that the LTU are recruited more readily by large employers, by employers in high unemployment areas, and to lower skilled jobs. Based on case studies two characteristic patterns were identified: continuous and sequential recruitment. Employers did not seem to use previous (un)employment history as selection criteria. However, the LTU were at risk of rejection in at least half the jobs studied, particularly in the case of "senior" jobs. Reasons for this are suggested.
