| Abstract: | The evolution of employee relations since the end of the Great Depression is sketched. The significant changes which have begun to take place in the last few years are characterized. New patterns of work and employment emerging in response to rapid technological advance and increased competition are analyzed. Functional and numerical flexibility of the workforce, and financial flexibility in management are thoroughly investigated. A simplified core/periphery model is presented as a frame of analysis. The conventional and the new lines of thinking are compared. The implications of the emerging pattern are assessed, and proposals for action are made. |
