Abstract:This article considers the situation in Russian banking sector. It divides the banks which have emerged to take a lead in Russia into three groups: pocket banks of the big industrial companies, the leanest of the commercial banks that weathered the devaluation storm, and banks that are state-owned. The author goes on considering these three groups of banks, describing the typical ones in each group and analysis the reasons allowed them to survive in crisis and their problem. The author states that despite of CBR (Central Bank of Russia ) data, saying that the banking sector is becoming healthier it is still tiny and playing a smaller role in economy than it should. One of the main conclusions of this article is that the banks in Russia will work as long as the economy grows, but if there is downturn all the bad loans will float to the surface.
