CORRUPTION

Abstract:At the start of 2002, the Abuja government promised to improve the reputation and workings of the Nigerian banking sector. Given the number of banking scams originating in the country this was indeed a stiff task, but one that was required if the Nigerian financial sector was to be taken seriously. The paper states that rampant corruption and a lax business ethic has made the Nigerian banking system a byword for fraud. All that is now changing - thanks to tough new measures the government has been pressured into introducing. In conclusion the paper states that the steps taken by the Nigerian government over the past year may have curtailed the worst abuses of the banking sector.
