Abstract:This paper aims at exploring a set of stakeholder (hereafter as: s-hldr./s-hldrs.) relationships (here as: r-ships.) in an international retailing context, notably those existing btw. retail firms (here as: r-firms.) and investment banks (here as: i-banks.), using data from 34 in-depth interviews with i-banks. and senior retail executives from two retail multinationals. Exploratory findings suggest that U.S. i-banks' ideals were at odds with European r-firms., both occupying "different thought worlds". It is concluded that the r-ships. btw. financial s-hldrs. and the r-firms. cannot be explained simply by reference to stylized economic interactions. However, they must also be examined in the light of the cultural contexts and different forms of market system within which different firms emerge, operate and interact.
