Abstract:This study supplements Vasterman's analysis of media hypes through a case study of five Danish media hypes between 2000-2005. It is shown that not every event has the potential to trigger a media hype: it must e.g. satisfy the general news values, contain some violation of norms and be suitable for public debate. It is concluded that media hypes begin with trigger event, last for approximately three weeks and usually come in three waves of decreasing intensity.
