Abstract: | Functional layouts encourage the processing of large batches which consequently leads to large amounts of work in progress inventory and long, unpredictable manufacturing lead times. In order to overcome these problems the traditional approach has been the use of group technology cells. Such cells enable flow process production methods to be implemented and hence just-in-time (JIT) procedures can be employed to control material movements. This first part explores process sequence cell layouts within high variety/low volume manufacturing environments. |
