Abstract:The objective of this paper is to develop preliminary design principles for the physical configuration of assembly systems. In the traditional configuration all workstations are arranged in series. Many new assembly systems have more flexible configurations, in which workstations are arranged in parallel. With this increased flexibility, there is a need for guidelines to help choose between alternative configurations. This paper develops an analytical model to evaluate serial, parallel and mixed assembly system configurations. The purpose is to identify when each configuration is cost-effective.
