Abstract:Unemployment is arguably the most problematic issue currently facing the governments of most European countries. The mininum wage is routinely held up by policy-makers to be one of the main barriers to job creation, as it allegedly prices low-paid workers out of the market. However, new research suggests that there is no hard evidence in support of this theory. The setting of national or sectoral minimum wages is a controversial policy aand one which has attracted much of the blame for high unemployment levels throughout Europe.
