Abstract:In every phase of human development, consumption of resources has increased by many orders of magnitude, which has affected natural processes and structures substantially. The sustainability of this trend causes great concern and theories, methods, and tools have been developed to analyze these trends, to assess their causes, and to invent solutions. These include minimizing resource and energy use, and reducing the wastes and emissions arising from resource use. This issue aims to give insights from material flow analysis' point of view to support management and policy decision making. The articles in this issue are as follows:
"Material flow analysis in the aluminum industry, by Bertram, M; Martchek, K.J. and Rombach, G. A Junkan-Gata society, by Hashimoto, S.
"Compact fluorescent bulbs and mercury pollution, by Aucott, M.
