Abstract:Proposed approaches to designing management compensation systems are examined in terms of their potential fit with three mental models of strategy: linear /output-oriented/, adaptive /flexible/, and interpretive /process-oriented/ strategies.A parallel typology of compensation plans is developed suggesting some important dimensions along which management reward systems can be varied. It is emphasized, however,that generic classifications provide only a starting point for understanding and designing effective management compensation plans.
