Abstract:Productivity is high in blue-collar workers, but white-collar employees still have room for improvement. Managers of office-based activities can adopt approaches similar to those implemented by manufacturing managers. The most successful manufacturing companies have matched new technology with good manufacturing practice. These methodologies can be applied to office work. Office managers, like manufacturing managers should never allow bottleneck resources to undertake work that can be performed elsewhere. The telephone can be the biggest reason for low white-collar productivity. It takes about 25 minutes of quiet to be able to concentrate in mental work.
