Abstract:New business opportunities for Western software companies are emerging in the Soviet market. The role of perestroika in the genesis of a Soviet software industry is described. Problems with some of the pre-perestroika projects are shown. Characteristics of Soviet software workers are mentioned. A number of programmers, sofware specialists have decided to set up their own - privately owned - cooperatives. Difficulties in access to hardware as an obstacle to more rapid development are stressed. The perspectives of Soviet software industry are assessed.
