Abstract:A Baynesian method, the confidence profile method, is introduced for adjusting and synthesizing the available pieces of evidence, from empirical studies and expert judgements, to estimate the effect of a health technology on health outcomes. Each independent piece of evidence is examined and a function for the likelihood of the observed result as a function of the possible values of the true effect of the technology is derived. The method can derive distributions. It can be used to adjust pieces of evidence for biases to internal and external validity. Its use is illustrated with the analysis of the effect of a thrombolytic agent on one-year survival from heart attacks.
