Abstract:Brandy currently ranks fifth in the league of best selling spirits, behind Scotch whisky, vodka, gin, and liqueurs and speciality spirits. Cognac was until 1988 the larger of the two main constituent parts of the brandy market in terms of sales volume, but grape brandy has since taken a clear lead. In 1992 it accounted for 58,5% of brandy volume, compared with 42,8% just ten years earlier. The distinction between cognac and grape brandy is very important. Cognac is a luxury product with a prestigious name and is subject to close regulation, while most grape brandies are markedly less expensive, have a different consumer franchise and lack the cachet of cognac. All brandy sold in UK is imported.
