Abstract:Dark rum has faced a difficult period in the last decade. In 1992, dark rum accounted for 3,4% of all spirits volume compared with 4,9% in 1979. Dark rum is now the smallest of the mainstream spirits categories, below cognac. Some efforts to revitalise the sector have been made but their impact has so far been limited. The dark rum market comprises three segments: standard-strength dark rum proper, high-strength dark rum proper and golden rum. Golden rum's share has edged up slowly although it has failed to fulfill the promise that had been expected five or so years ago. All supplies of rum to the UK are imported, mostly from the Carribean.
