Abstract: | The total number of licensed premises in the UK has grown almost without interruption since 1960, turning down only in 1992 after reaching a record 203 ,341 in 1991. This was 57% up on the 1960 level. There were 52,282 off-licences in 1992, 23% more than in 1980 and 65% more than in 1970. On-licences totalled 147,285, a rise of 12% since 1980 and 31% since 1970. Much of the growth in on-licences comprised restricted on licences, mostly restaurants. Full on-licences, principally public houses but including some hotels, have shown a rise of 9% since 1980 and only 13% since 1970. Over the last two decades there has been a sustained shift away from on-trade drinking towards off-trade purchases for at-home drinking. |
