Abstract:The article summarizes trends in the fast growing market for alcoholic beverages defined here as wine, spirits and beer in the Hungarian market. Total consumer expenditure has grown faster than the one of alcoholic drinks btw. 1990 and 1994. Prices of alcoholic drinks have risen at a slower pace than consumer prices as a whole. Beer have dominated the Hungarian market with 71% share in volume and a 56% share in value in 1994, down by six and four percentage points respectively since the year 1990. Sales of wine registered the strongest relative growth over the survey period in a declining market environment. Prices of imported drinks in Hungary are considerably higher than the ones of domestic products. The main reason is high import duty. The majority of alcoholic drinks are distributed through general food stores in Hungary.
