Abstract:Project HERA (Human and Environmental Risk Assessment) is a collaborative venture of the International Soap, Detergent and Maintenance Products Association and the European Chemical Industry Council, their member companies and other interested parties. Initiated in 1999, its objective is to deliver risk assessments on the ingredients of household cleaning products and, by so doing, to show that the HERA risk assessment concept can be applied successfully to the phases of domestic use and subsequent fate of such chemicals. By achieving this objective HERA will not only provide relevant safety evaluations concerning the substances used in these products but also explore many of the issues raised by a new EU chemicals policy - issue such as consortium-building, the sharing of data and attendant legal issues.
