Abstract:Despite Borland's successful appeal in the Lotus case and other legal decisions affirming the right of competitors to achieve compatibility with an existing program as a matter of copyright law, the legal struggle over software compatibility continues. This column will bring readers up to date on the legal developments affecting compatibility. Lawyers have a somewhat different perspective about software compatibility issues than do members of the technical community or economists. This is not surprising given that lawyers have to work within the confines of existing legal categories not always well-suited to deal with issues raised in software cases.
